Teaching preschoolers about Pretzels

I've done a pretzel cooking class for my own children at their Montessori preschool three times now. It's a big hit. This is a great learning experience for the kids. That is my inspiration for creating this wiki. The only thing I don't have is my own portable convection oven...

What's cool about my Pretzel Class:

This is more than a simple "cooking class". Check it out; there are hands-on experiments that can be done, starting a week or two before class. The kids learn about:

* the life cycle of wheat

* where flour really comes from, i.e. not the grocery store!

* yeast producing gas, in a really fun visual way

* following instructions

* working with dough: shaping the pretzels

* boiling and baking

* if you have them make the dough too, they can measure and knead. Since my students are pre-K to Kindergarten, I make the dough ahead of time.

The kids really enjoy learning in this hands-on way, and come away with a concrete understanding of what the pretzels are made of. It's great to connect what they are eating with that plant that's growing in a pot or field. Plus, it is fun to play with dough, and fresh pretzels are really delicious!
